Real Strength & Conditioning for
Our Unique Sport

Born in Ardmore, OK on December 27th, 1975 I have always had a love of the outdoors and physical activities. As a child I participated in football, baseball, soccer and basketball. In high school I discovered track and cross country, two sports that I greatly excelled at, making All-League my senior year in track. During this time I was first introduced to the use of strength training in order to enhance my performance through my track coach and, seeing the difference that it made in my running, I began to research different methods in order to accelerate my progress.

After realizing that my drive to learn everything that I could about improving human performance was not normal I decided to seek certification as a strength coach through the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) in 1998. Because of my outstanding performance on the certification test, I was given the opportunity to work for them as their Assistant Director of Educational and Technical Support.
As part of this job I was responsible for fielding phone calls from students, trainers and strength coaches, answering any questions they had.

From help with their certification test to program suggestions for elite athletes, I was tasked with either knowing the answer or knowing where to find the answer. To accomplish this I read everything he could find on the subjects of training, nutrition and supplements (which I still do to this day).

During this time I also became certified in several areas through the ISSA, including Certified Fitness Trainer, Fitness Therapy, Performance Nutrition and Youth Fitness. I also started and acted as the Editor in Chief the ISSA’s online fitness magazine ( www.protraineronline.com) as well as becoming a published author in several leading fitness magazines such as Physical Magazine, BodyBuilding.com and Testosterone.net.

This high level of commitment to my education and rapid rise in the strength training field also led to me becoming one of the youngest members of the ISSA to earn the rank of Master of Sports Sciences, the highest level of certification this prestigious organization can bestow upon one of its trainers.

It was during that time with the ISSA that I bought my first mountain bike in 2000. Soon after that my training priorities changed drastically. I started mountain biking in the mountains behind Santa Barbara, CA and the rough, rocky trails caused me to quickly realize that mountain biking’s highly physical nature needed a far different approach than the track influenced one I was following.

Although I used the resources available to me through the ISSA to search for good resources on mountain bike strength training, none of them seemed to be made with true athletic training in mind. Because of this I instinctively began to structure a unique training style in order to accelerate my progress as a rider.

Through trial and error I started to find exercises and strategies that noticeably enhanced my riding. Moving to the San Diego area 2001 and then to Hawaii in 2003 allowed me even more chances to progress my riding and training strategies. In 2006 I decided to bring my unique training system to the mountain bike community at large and the MTB Strength Training System was born.
